The topic of “near field communications” is impossible to miss in 2013. All of the major mobile manufacturers rely on NFC. The technology has arrived and is bringing users a wave of practical applications this year. Examples are audio systems with Mobile Connect, authentications at door locks, POI applications, through which the mobile device can independently refer its user to specific offers in the surrounding area or payment technologies, such as Square and Google Wallet. A propos payment: In the second quarter of 2013 PayPal will be starting its own payment system for small and medium-sized companies – with cash machine terminals and a one-off €100 activation fee. That makes taxis and restaurants a notch more independent from card complete. Yet the entire banking sector will have to dress warmly: The classic monetary transaction device is under serious pressure.
